Promiscuity has nothing to do with genital mutilation - NGO,JDPC

A nongovernmental organization (NGO),Onelife Initiative for Human Development and Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) have said that the practice of being indiscriminate in the choice of sexual partners has nothing to do with mutilation.

They made the call in Ibadan during a programme tagged "End Female Genital Mutilation Poster Art Competition Award Ceremony

Speaking on the purpose of the campaign, the Programmes and Media Manager,Onelife Initiative for Human Development,Mr.Sola Fagorusi,said the campaign is done to  reduce the prevalent level of female genital mutilation in Nigeria.

In contrary to the popular insinuation that promiscuity among girls has something to do with genital mutilation,Fagorusi said:"We only need to emphasis on moral training and good character, If parents brought up their children properly,the girl child will not be promiscuous and we won't be talking clitoris or any part of the body responsible for indulging in female genital mutilation.

He streesed that sexuality education should be given to children,both boys and girls at the early stage.

Speaking on the effects of FGM,Fagorusi pointed that this could cause obstruction for women in labour and difficulty in delivery and Vesico vagina Fistula.

He said:"According to Director General of Vesico Centre in Ebonyi. Ebonyi is number two in term of national ranking  FMG.

The global figure says that 200 million girls have actually been mutilated . 10 per cent of the statistics is in Nigeria.The implication of this is that 20 million girls have been mutilated".

Speaking from legal perspectives,Barrister Ronke Ige from Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC)  described FMG as a family crime,saying there are various legal provisions locally,nationally and internationally to seek redress on the matter.

They however called on governments to put an end to end female genital mutilation

because it has caused more harm than good.

Court dissolves 5-year-old marriage over husband negligence

An ibadan customary court(Mapo) has dissolved a 5- year- old marriage over the husband's, Dare Adesiyan uncaring attitudes.

The President, Odunade Adekola, while delivering his judgment said
the defendant was adamant in not honouring the summon of the court to resolve the case.

The court however has no choice than to dissolve the union

The court president ordered that custody of the child produced in the union is hereby given to the petitioner"

The defendant is however  responsible for the child's education and a monthly sum of #5000 for the her up keeping.

Earlier, the petitioner, Mrs Modupe Adesiyan alleged that her husband has refused to perform his responsibilities as a father since she put to bed 4years ago

"He doesn't come around to check on us neither does he cares about our wellbeing"

"Besides, his family never wanted us to be together perhaps because I was once a divocee"
I hereby plead with this court to dissolve the union.

Nigeria is faced with the challenge of moral decadence

Hon. Abike Dabiri - Erewa. Senior Special Assistant Foreign Affairs and Diaspora has said that most of the moral decadence traceable to the youths in the society were product of bad parenting, bad rearing and lack of discipline of the Nigerian parents.

Dabiri - ,Erewa ably represented by AlhajAbdulrahman Balogun at the 2017 International women's/ mother's day celebration  organised by Nigeria Association of women Journalists (NAWOJ)  Oyo chapter made it known that child rearing and discipline is a joint collaborative efforts of both parents and the child.

He said the dichotomy between father and mother in the training ,rearing and discipline of a child would impact the child's life negatively, adding that two good heads are better than one. "It is the duty of both parents to ensure child rearing and discipline, the concept of two heads show that one cannot be self - sufficient in all things, there will be certain things others must contribute as well" He added.

Speaking on the topic "Child Rearing and discipline: Pathway to greatness, Balogun said the country is faced with the challenge of moral decadence thus, urged modern Nigerian parents to give their children good moral upbringing.

"The Nigerian parenting style  of today has evolved, is a mixture of stick and carrot with a lot of persuasion,meaning that as the child deserved punishment , he also deserved  love ".

Held at NUJ Press Centre,Iyaganku, Ibadan, Mr Fatai Ajibade, chairman of the occasion added that parents are responsible to instill discipline and inculcate the right values in their children for the betterment of the society.

Earlier, in her welcome address Mrs Foluke Lala, Chairperson, Nigeria Association of women Journalists ( NAWOJ) Oyo chapter urged parents to be monitoring their children as bad influence corrupt good manners.

Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ) Oyo chapter, urged  women to stand up for their right in legitimate ways  on the issue of violence  in gender inequalities.

Among the dignitaries  that grace the occasion are  Chief Lekan Alabi, Agba - Akin of Ibadanland represent ing   Olubadan of Ibadanland Oba Saliu Adetunji, Aje Ogungunniso I.

The  awardees are  Mrs Funke Egbemode, MD /editor - in - chief Daily Telegraph  Mrs Zhikrah  Akanbi of Libragold  Travels and Tours and Prof. Mrs Oluyemisi Obilade, Vice Chancellors, Tai Solarin  University of Education.
